Maintenance of the lubrication system of Cummins generator sets

    The lubrication system of a diesel Generator Set is one of its crucial components. Its excellent performance can extend the lifespan of the generator set and significantly reduce its fuel consumption to a certain extent. Therefore, maintaining the lubrication system is of utmost importance. So, how can we conduct a comprehensive and effective maintenance of the Cummins generator set's lubrication system?

Before starting a new Cummins generator set, oil should be added through the oil filler. When adding oil, the Cummins diesel generator set should be placed in a horizontal position and attention should be paid to observing the change in oil level. After adding oil, wait for a while before checking the oil level on the dipstick, as the correct oil level is only visible after all the oil has flowed into the oil pan. Each oil filter should be filled with clean oil before being installed on the engine.

In the process of selecting engine oil, firstly, it is important to choose the appropriate oil viscosity, and secondly, it must meet the performance level of the American Petroleum Institute (API) classification. Cummins diesel generator sets require the use of multi-grade viscosity engine oil, as it has a wider operating temperature range and a consumption rate about 30% lower than single-grade viscosity engine oil. The performance level of engine oil represents the level of engine oil additives. For heavy-duty engines, the main protection comes from the additives in the engine oil. As additives gradually wear out over time, only by selecting engine oil of sufficient grade can the engine be reliably protected throughout the entire oil change cycle.

After completing the above two steps, the maintenance work that needs to be done next is to check the oil level. What should we pay attention to during the oil level check?

1. Check the engine crankcase oil level and ensure it is between the "Add" and "Full" marks on the "Engine Stopping" side of the oil dipstick.

2. Every 250 hours, take an S.O.S. oil sample, and then replace the oil filter and engine oil.

3. Check the oil level weekly and maintain it at the correct level; check whether the oil pressure is normal after starting the engine.

4. Check the oil level annually and maintain it at the correct level; check whether the oil pressure is normal after starting the engine; take an oil sample (S.O.S) and replace it.

5. Engine oil and oil filter.

Clean the crankcase breather every 250 hours.

7. Check the following components for leaks: crankshaft seal, crankcase, oil filter, oil passage plug, sensor, and valve cover.

8. Check the pipes, T-shaped tubes, and pipe clamps on the crankcase breather.

It ensures the stability of the lubrication system of the diesel generator set, making it easier and more convenient to use, and greatly extending its service life.
